The likelihood of a fresh green bean purchase slipped six percentage points from last year, putting purchases near the 2010 level.

Green beansAge and income play a role in green bean purchases, with the likelihood of purchase increasing according to those factors. In fact, consumers earning more than $100,000 annually were more than twice as likely to buy the vegetable as those in the lowest income group.

Shoppers in the South and Northeast were more likely to snap up beans than those in other regions. Midwestern consumers, which comprised the region most likely to buy last year, were least likely to buy beans in Fresh Trends 2013.

Over the past few years, it’s clear that more shoppers are putting organic green beans in their cart. This year 28% of green bean buyers said they bought organic beans at least some of the time – a number up from 17% two years ago. Western shoppers and those with three or more kids at home were most likely to buy organic product periodically. Six percent of buyers said they always purchased organic green beans.
