Organizzazione Interprofessionale Pera sponsored a tasting event featuring exotic uses of Italy’s Abate Fetel pear.

According to a news release, the Organizzazione hosted the event for produce professionals at Eataly NYC on Nov. 13. The menu included a three-course tasting prepared by Eataly NYC’s chef Nicoletta Grippo, showcasing the versatility of Abate Fetel pears. Grown primarily in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, the Abate Fetel is a favored variety among consumers in Europe, according to the release. It became available in the U.S. in 2013.

The Organizzazione Interprofessionale Pera, a trade group representing Italian pear producers, promote the pears in Italy and export markets worldwide. Italy is the largest European producer of the Abate Fetel pear, growing more than 300,000 tons annually. The Eataly NYC event comes in advance of the variety’s arrival in major U.S. points of sale, according to the release.
