More than 11,000 tons of blueberries will be shipped from Argentina to the U.S. during the 2011-12 season, according to an estimate from the Buenos Aires-based Argentinean Blueberry Committee.

That would triple the amount of blueberries exported to the U.S. over the past five years.

The first air shipments from Argentina should beginning arriving the week of Oct. 3, according to a news release from the committee.

Harvest is underway in the Tucuman region of Argentina, and will be followed by harvests in the Concordia region in October and the Buenos Aires region in November.
