Greenhouse tomato grower-shipper Backyard Farms has earned a “best” rating from Whole Foods Market.

The rating is the highest one in the retailer’s new Responsibly Grown produce-rating system, which measures growing practices including worker welfare, soil quality and pesticide practices.

Backyard Farms also was recently named Whole Foods’ North Atlantic Region Produce Supplier of the Year.

“We are thrilled to receive a ‘best’ rating from Whole Foods Market,” Stuart Jablon, Madison, Maine-based Backyard Farms’ president and chief operating officer, said in a company news release. “We share many of the same corporate values, of which several are recognized with this rating, and Whole Foods Market is an outstanding partner to work with both in general and as part of this rating process.”
