In Washington D.C. on Oct. 26, expect to see more than just runners at this year’s Marine Corps Marathon. Turbana is partnering with the Marine Corps Marathon for the fourth year as official banana sponsor of the event. According to a news release, as runners cross the finish line, they can replenish their lost electrolytes with the help of 30,000 donated Turbana bananas.
In order to go beyond a traditional sponsorship though, the Coral Gables, Fla.-based company is pushing its “Powered by the Peel” initiative to help inspire runners along the 26.2-mile course. “Powered by the Peel” invites runners to voice their reasons for running on social media outlets in an effort to inspire others. Together with the Marine Corps Marathon, Turbana will select 15 of the most empowering messages to be displayed along the marathon course.
“The Turbana team has been moved by the emotions that the Marines and runners infuse into this community event,” Marion Tabard, director of marketing at Turbana, said in a press release. “We want the runners to feel supported throughout … their 26.2 mile journey.”
As a part of this initiative, Turbana’s street team will be in the city on the morning of the race providing cold runners with hand warmers. At the Finish Festival, Turbana’s “Powered by the Peel” street team will also provide 7,500 bags of Turbana plantain chips.
In addition, the company will share with runners, spectators, and volunteers the benefits of composting waste material. All attendees will be encouraged to compost their banana peels at the Finish Festival, as Turbana team members then donate the composted material and leftover bananas to charitable organizations in the area.
