Birko is introducing a product that cleans belts and brushes packinghouses use to apply wax during product packaging.

Packinghouses use wax to coat many fruits and vegetables to protect the product during transit and storage.

The Henderson, Colo.-based Birko’s Wax-Oft was specifically designed to clean the belts and brushes that apply wax to tree fruits and other products during packing, according to a news release.

If excess wax isn’t removed from packing line equipment on a regular basis, the wax levels increases and can interfere with equipment operation and could prevent proper wax application, according to the release.

The excess was could also negatively affect product quality and shelf life, according to the release.

Because of the wax’s hydrophobic or water-repelling properties, Birko needed a special blend of surfactants and solvents to effectively clean the processing equipment, according to the release.

Birko plans to showcase the product at its booth at the June 10-13 United Fresh Produce Association’s United Fresh 2014 in Chicago.

Birko is a food safety material supplier for the sanitation side of processing facilities.
