A new requirement from the CanadaGAP program shouldn’t be a significant burden on industry and should provide another layer of food safety protection, according to the Canadian Produce Marketing Association.

The CanadaGAP board and stakeholder advisory committee refers to the change as “significant” in a news release.

Effective April 1, 2015, CanadaGAP auditors will seek documentation from packing, repacking, storage and wholesale operations that their products are sourced from suppliers who also have certification from CanadaGAP or another recognized third-party food safety auditor or certifier.

“The board is unanimous in seeing this as the next logical step to maintain the rigor and integrity that has come to be associated with CanadaGAP certification,” board chairman Jack Bates said in the release.

Jane Proctor, vice president for policy and issue management at CPMA, said the association is “extremely supportive” of the new requirement.

“This makes the best sense for industry and adds another layer of food safety that is good for everyone,” Proctor said July 22. “This should not place any undue burden on (companies) and should help ensure food safety.”
