The California Cantaloupe Advisory Board is battling foodborne illness through a social media campaign. The board will work to build its Twitter following at the upcoming Produce Marketing Association Fresh Summit in New Orleans.

California cantaloupe grower-shippers developed the produce industry’s only mandatory food safety program that invites government auditors for inspections of cantaloupe operations. The board paired Facebook and Twitter accounts with the program to educate on the mandatory requirements and update their followers with important cantaloupe information.

Fresh Summit attendees can enter the #HealthySmiles promotion to win a $1,000 prize at the board’s booth, #3439. Participants will have photos taken and tweeted via the board’s account — @CalCantaloupes. Two winners will be selected during the convention.

“Half of the prize we award will be donated in the winners’ names to STOP Foodborne Illness, a national non-profit public health organization dedicated to the prevention of illness from foodborne pathogens. We are very pleased to support this organization and are encouraging others throughout the produce industry to do the same,” said chairman of the board. Garrett Patricio, in a news release.

The campaign will be introduced to consumers next season after the board has gained a following in the produce industry.
