Employees of Chiquita Brands International are spending Earth Day volunteering in community gardens and schools.

Employees who work in Chiquita’s Charlotte, N.C., headquarters are volunteering on Earth Day, April 22, at several Charlotte gardens and three Charlotte schools, according to a news release.

“Chiquita is and has been committed to improving the communities in which our employees work and live,” Ed Lonergan, Chiquita’s president and chief executive officer, said in the release. “Activities like these reflect our strong belief that we are in this world to make it better by improving lives, loving our planet and leading our industry.”

Employees in other Chiquita offices also are volunteering on Earth Day. In the tropics, company volunteers will plant more than 1,000 trees in communities surrounding Chiquita banana farms.

In Guatemala, every volunteer will label a tree they plant with their name to show their commitment to the protection of the environment.
