In its role as a national strategic partner with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Nutrition Communications Network, Chiquita Brands International Inc. is launching “nutrition engagement” initiatives for its employees and consumers.

The Cincinnati-based produce giant declared Sept. 20 “Make Half Your Plate Fruits and Vegetables” day for its employees as part of efforts that are scheduled to run through October, according to a news release. A corporate program, Live! Chiquita, encourages employees to develop more nutritious eating habits and active lifestyles.

For consumers, Chiquita plans an October launch of a new, social media-integrated website,, that will have enhanced recipe and nutrition information sections based on the MyPlate program and U.S. Dietary guidelines. The MyPlate icon will also be added to the Chiquita Bites line, which includes apples, grapes and pineapple snack packages.

To round out its campaign, Chiquita is participating in the MyPlate Makeover Challenge sponsored by the Produce for Better Health Foundation. The company will promote the contest through social media and sponsor a weekly plate on the MyPlate Makeover Challenge Facebook page.

Consumers will be invited to makeover their own plates and submit photos of meals that are half fruits and vegetables. Uploaded photos will earn consumers a chance to win $100 grocery gift cards from the Produce for Better Health Foundation.
