D’Arrigo Bros. Co. of California is expanding its romaine heart line with the introduction of a 12-pack of three-count organic hearts in a bag design that recalls the ownership family’s origins in Europe.
On the back, the familiar Andy Boy logo rests on a map between Italy and Sicily. The D’Arrigo founders emigrated from Italy in the early 1900s from their hometown of Messina, Sicily.
The rollout reflects an increasing commitment to organics by the Salinas, Calif.-based grower-shipper.
“We are expanding our business to meet the organic needs within the industry and we are in the process of capitalizing on our land equity to become a sustainable player in this category,” Matt Amaral, director of business development, said Dec. 22 in a news release.
“We are getting positive feedback on the new colors and the boot of Italy on the back of the bag,” said John Scherpinski, director of sales.
