Domex Superfresh expects big Washington apple volumesDomex Superfresh Growers is on track to ship most sizes, grades and cultivars of its Washington apples by Sept. 1, chief horticulturalist Dave Gleason said in a video update on the crop.

“We’ve got excellent fruit that is sizing well,” Gleason said July 26. “We’ve got a big crop this year but there is going to be all sizes of fruit available. We’re about a week earlier than normal.”

In recent years there has been an increasing demand for Washington apples that the industry responded to by improving and expanding orchards as well as packing, storage and processing facilities.

“This year we’re seeing everything come together,” Gleason said. “The weather’s perfect.”

With still a month to go before harvest, it may not stay that way.

“Things can happen,” he said. “Even a couple days ago we had a windstorm in one area that was so fierce it actually knocked down a few trees.”

It has the potential to be a record sized crop, according to Domex Superfresh Growers.
