Don Rhyno, produce director for Calgary, Alberta-based The Produce People Ltd., and former president of the Canadian Produce Marketing Association, retired Dec. 31.

Rhyno, The Packer’s 1988 Canadian Produce Person of the Year, succeeded Wayne Haryett at The Produce People in 2002 and succeeded Leo Arsenault at CPMA in 1992.

Rhyno worked in the produce industry for almost 50 years. Before joining The Produce People, he was the Toronto-based national category director of fruit and floral for Stellarton, Nova Scotia-based Sobeys Canada Inc.

Rhyno also worked as manager of wholesale produce for Bolands Ltd., Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was active in the Canadian Fruit Wholesalers Association and the Atlantic Fresh Produce Association.

The Produce People is a division of the Edmonton, Alberta-based The Grocery People Ltd., a wholesale food distributor owned by Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based Federated Co-operatives Limited.

The Grocery People supplies independent grocery retailers in Western Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territory.
