The Partnership for Food Safety Education’s consumer food safety conference is seeking presentation topics.

The group is asking for abstracts for presentations for the national consumer food safety education conference scheduled for December 5-6, in Arlington, Va., according to a release from the Food and Drug Administration.

The event’s mission is to educate condumers about preventing foodborne illnesses, according to the release, and includes representatives from the FDA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the food industry, professional societies in food science, and nutrition and health consumer groups.

The December conference, supported by FDA, CDC and USDA, will be the fifth in a series of conferences sponsored by the Partnership for Food Safety Education. Leaders of government, industry, consumer groups and food safety educators meet to evaluate the best ways to educate consumers about steps they can take to avoid foodborne illness, according to the release.

The conference concentrates on four themes, according to the release:

    • Motivating behavior change — Exploring ways to create messages that are effective in changing consumer behaviors that will reduce their risk of contracting foodborne illnesses;
      • Assessing food safety education programs — Examining how educators can assess and document the effectiveness of food-safety education in changing consumer food-handling behavior.;
        • Use of social media — Considering the tools and technologies food-safety educators can use to deliver their messages successfully to target audiences in an increasingly crowded information marketplace; and
        • Real world/real change — Reaching target audiences: Reviewing case studies of education programs that have been successful in changing food-handling behavior in a defined target audience.

        Abstracts for oral or poster presentations at the conference must be submitted by June 10 and can be submitted at the partnership’s website.

        Presenters will be notified whether their abstract has been accepted by June 30. More information about the conference also is available at Together: A Food Safe America
