Stockton, Calif.-based Grower Direct Marketing LLC and O-G Packing & Cold Storage Co. have started shipments of their Monstercot apricot variety.

It’s the fifth season of production for the proprietary variety, which ships late April through the end of May. It’s also sourced from Chile in January.

Growers are increasing acreage because of the fruit’s disease tolerance, early harvest and resistance to damage from rain or hail, Grower Direct Marketing salesman Mark Cotton said in a news release.

Monstercots are delivered within 24-48 hours of harvest, according to the release. Early ripening, sweetness and bright coloring compared to traditional apricots were the aims as the companies developed the fruit.

Grower Direct Marketing and O-G Packing also grow, ship and market cherries, blueberries, asparagus and walnuts.
