Haun Potato Co. marks 30th year of donationsKANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thirty years, 42,000 pounds of potatoes and 4,500 families.

Those are the key figures that stood out in Dave Haun’s mind Dec. 13 as he and his company, Merriam, Kan.-based Haun Potato Co., donated a truckload of Red River Valley potatoes to the Kansas City Salvation Army.

“I’m proud that my son has carried on the tradition,” said former owner Dick “Spud” Haun, 88, Dave’s father, who began the Christmastime potato gift-giving in 1982.

Over the years, the program has expanded and now members of the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association including O.C. Schultz, J.G. Hall, Associated Potato Growers, Northern Valley Growers and A&L Potato Co. — partner with Haun Potato on the program.

Dave Haun said he expects this year’s donation to help The Salvation Army prepare more than 4,500 food baskets and help supply a feeding program as well.
