The Houston Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association has donated 2.5 million pounds of fresh produce to the Houston Food Bank.

The association made the donation Dec. 15 at its 28th annual Gift of Produce event, according to a food bank news release. The fruits and vegetables will be distributed to the food bank’s 600 partner agencies, which serve 18 southeast Texas counties.

The donation is the equivalent of more than 5 million servings of produce.

In 28 years, the association has donated more than 29 million pounds of produce to the food bank.

“In our work with retailers across the city, we don’t always have first-hand contact with people in our community who need help feeding their families. The Gift of Produce is our way of helping these neighbors,” Tim Nowlin, the association’s president, said in the release. “We are proud to partner with Houston Food Bank to fight hunger in our community with good nutrition, and I am proud of the work of our organization and its members.”
