(UPDATED, 6 p.m.) Houweling’s Tomatoes is touting the flavor of the varieties it markets.
During the last three years, the staff at the Delta, British Columbia-based greenhouse grower-shipper has worked with seed companies throughout the world to conduct trials of more than 100 new varieties, according to a news release.
The trials helped Houweling’s introduce new products including Houweling’s Signature Medley Snacking Tomatoes and Signature Heirloom Tomatoes. The company also move 100% of its grape tomato acreage to a higher flavor, lesser yielding variety.
“In a competitive market with rising cost pressures, it is not easy to make a decision to take 10% less yield, but I firmly believe delivering a consistent … eating experience will ensure Houweling’s Tomatoes long-term success,” Casey Houweling, chief executive officer, said in the release.
Research shows a sharp increase in consumer preference and demand for higher flavor varieties, according to the release.
Factors including convenience and health have increased the popularity of the snacking tomato category, but ultimately, taste is the leading factor for encouraging consumption, according to the release.
Houweling’s grows tomatoes throughout the year on 175 acres in British Columbia and Camarillo, Calif.
In January, the company plans to begin harvesting from its new 28-acre farm in Mona, Utah.
In other news, Houweling’s was recognized as a 2014 Cool Planet Award winner in the agriculture sector. The award recognizes Southern California Edison customers for energy-saving methods, specifically for Houweling’s environmental and greenhouse gas emissions management systems.
