With a truckload of pineapple and an ounce of gold, a ValuMarket Supermarket in Louisville, Ken., claims yo-ho-ho rights as the winner of the Del Monte Fresh Produce Inc. “Gold for Gold” display contest.

Store manager Dave York said the pirate-themed display — conceived by produce manager Jeff Neumann for the November contest — would be recreated Feb. 7 as a backdrop for the grand prize award presentation by Del Monte Fresh corporate officials.

“We’re going to have the music back and the grill out again too,” York said on Feb. 5.

Pirate tunes compliments of the band Drunken Sailor and pineapple upside-down cake straight off the grill were part of the store’s pirate day promotion in November that featured Del Monte Gold pineapple in the special display, York said.

“We also had booty bags hidden around the store and the customers who found them got to keep the prizes inside,” York said.

Retailers in Canada and the U.S. participated in the display contest, according to a news release from Del Monte Fresh, Coral Gables, Fla. The promotion included consumer sweepstakes on Facebook in addition to the retail display competition.
