Peter Leifermann, a longtime south Florida tropicals marketer and executive, has joined a Miami-based Brazilian papaya and ginger importer.
Leifermann is vice president of sales and marketing for Pantai USA Inc., an importer and distributor of Brazilian solo papaya shipped under the Interfruit label. Pantai is the exclusive marketer and distributor of Interfruit Alimentos Ltda. of Linhares ES, Brasil.
The decade-old Pantai also markets Brazil ginger and eddo, a root vegetable. With Leifermann’s addition, Pantai is now marketing Florida tropicals.
Pantai officials cited Leifermann for his two decades of produce and tropicals sales experience and said he brings grower-shipper, import, foodservice and wholesale experience to Pantai’s product lineup.
Leifermann said he has long worked with Guy Fernandes, Pantai’s chief executive officer, who has supplied Leifermann with papaya. He said Fernandes’ worth ethic, in part, attracted him to the position.
Florida’s tropicals should benefit by the move, Leifermann said.
“There has always been something of a disconnect between the supply and demand side of south Florida tropicals,” he said. “They’ve probably not received the marketing that they deserved. I have always worked toward making those ends meet more closely. Pantai will have the opportunity to ensure that happens.”
Leifermann left the Miami-based J&C Tropicals Inc. on May 6. He was a former managing partner for Homestead, Fla.-based C-Brand Tropicals Inc., and became president of Homestead-based Fresh King Inc. when Fresh King bought C-Brand in 2006.
Leifermann entered the produce industry in buying and sales for Miami-based Coosemans Worldwide Inc.’s Atlanta and Cleveland operations where he worked until 2000.
