All U.S. employers will have to use the federal E-Verify system, if House Judiciary Committee chairman Lamar Smith’s pending legislation is successful.
Ray Gilmer, vice president of communications for the United Fresh Produce Association, Washington, D.C., said Smith, R-Texas, is expected to introduce a bill mandating the use of E-Verify to confirm the eligibility of workers by all employers.
The House Judiciary Committee’s website has a notice of a June 15 hearing on the Legal Workforce Act. However, the bill’s text was not provided on the committee’s website.
The committee is expected to consider the bill before the August recess.
In a June 9 e-mail, United Fresh said that representatives from the association and the Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform met with committee leaders.
