Another Pennsylvania mushroom grower-shipper is embracing the SG Systems traceability program.

Mushroom shipper opts for SG Systems traceability programMother Earth LLC, Landenberg, Pa., is investing in the Dallas-based SG Systems LLC’s paperless traceability system to gain Produce Traceability Initiative and Food Safety Modernization Act compliance.

Mother Earth decided to go with SG System’s system that others in the industry are using and with a system that’s easy to use on shippers’ production floors, according to a news release.

Mother Earth officials visited Avondale, Pa.-based To-Jo Fresh Mushrooms Inc.’s SG Systems implementation, Meghan Klotzbach, Mother Earth’s quality assurance coordinator, said in the release.

“The solution proved to generate impressive financial savings and hit the PTI milestones at the same time,” Klotzbach said in the release.

“The Management Team at To-Jo recommended SG Systems and is a keen supporter of the PTI, using it to drive business improvement. On this basis, we decided to make the investment with SG Systems and go for a 2012 implementation.”

To-Jo adopted SG System’s program in 2009.

SG System’s system includes six touch-screen operator terminals, thermal label printers and bar code readers, scales plus four handheld computers/scanners, which enables weighing and labeling incoming pallets with information detailing lot number, product, supplier, weight and barcode information, according to the release.

As the products are shipped, the traceability is linked back to the incoming lot number and subsequently traced through the packaging process, according to the release.

Founded in 1921, Mother Earth is a fifth-generation grower, packer and shipper of fresh, dried and frozen organic mushrooms.

A wholly owned subsidiary of CP Yeatman & Sons Inc., Mother Earth calls itself the oldest and largest U.S. certified organic mushroom farm, according to the release.
