RBest Produce Inc., a New York wholesaler, is moving to larger headquarters.

In late September, Bronx, N.Y.-based RBest completed construction of a new warehouse and headquarters in the Long Island city of Port Washington, N.Y.

New York distributor RBest relocates to Long IslandThe company, which distributes primarily to retail customers throughout the Northeast, is scheduling an Oct. 23 grand opening, said Carl DelPrete, vice president.

It plans to complete its relocation on Oct. 14, he said.

About 70,000 square feet of the 182,000-square-foot building is dedicated to produce, more than double the 30,000 square feet it operated from on Food Center Dr. across the street from the Hunts Point Terminal Market.

The building’s refrigeration capacity can store produce at six different temperatures and should provide the company better control over its product, DelPrete said.

The facility is undergoing a Primus Labs audit and expects to receive its certification by December, he said.

“From a delivery standpoint, it’s really in a centralized location for our business on Long Island and in the boroughs,” DelPrete said. “We won’t be dealing with the local Bronx traffic and congestion issues at Hunts Point. Though Hunts Point is light years ahead of where it was 25 years ago, it’s still not the most comfortable place to get in and out of during market hours.”

DelPrete said produce demand remains strong in the Northeast and said the new operation is bringing 80 local jobs.

RBest distributes a full line of produce to customers from Rhode Island to Philadelphia and imports tropicals through its sister company, Miami-based El Sol Brands Inc., which also sells from a New York office.

DelPrete helped start the company in the early 1990s with his brother Phillip DelPrete, president and chairman of board, who sold produce in the city since the early 1980s.
