Members of the Organic Trade Association elected Melody Meyer, vice president for policy and industry relations at United Natural Foods Inc, to lead their board as president.

Meyer has served five years on the board. Her qualifications include 37 years in the organic industry with experience in retail, wholesale, Fair Trade, policy and education, according to a news release. Meyer was a founder of Source Organic, which was purchased by Albert’s Organic in 2001. She later became senior director of procurement for Albert’s Organics and vice president of policy and industry relations for United Natural Foods, which owns Albert’s Organics.

She succeeds Matt McLean of Uncle Matt’s Organic, who was president for the past two years.

“We have great opportunities ahead to protect and advance organic agriculture and educate consumers on its benefits,” Meyer said in the release.

Other new officers of the Organic Trade Association are vice president Sarah Bird of Annie’s Inc., secretary Leslie Zuck of Pennsylvania Certified Organic, and treasurer Tony Bedard of Frontier Natural Products Co-op. Ian Walker of Left Coast Naturals is now vice president of the Canadian Organic Trade Association.
