Organics Unlimited campaign supports banana workersOrganics Unlimited Inc., is raising more money to support banana workers in Ecuador and Mexico through its September retail GROW Month campaign.

In its ninth year, the Giving Resources and Opportunities to Workers campaign supports the workers through sale of GROW-labeled organic bananas.

San Diego-based Organics Unlimited plans to place a portion of proceeds from each box sold into the GROW Fund, which supports scholarships, educational programs, health clinics and safe water projects for workers and families.

The campaign is scheduled to begin Sept. 1 and retailers who carry the GROW label are encouraged to share positive stories they helped support, according to a news release.

Since 2005, GROW has raised more than $1 million and this year, Organics Unlimited generated nearly $250,000 for the fund, according to the release.

International Community Foundation manages and distributes the donations which have helped support community benefit programs including Project Amigo in Mexico and Children International in Ecuador, according to the release.

“Each year our customers asking for the GROW label exceed our expectations,” Mayra Velazquez de Leon, Organics Unlimited’s president and GROW founder. “They are benefitting from the program as much as the people they are helping in Mexico and Ecuador. They are changing lives.”
