The parent company of Treasure Valley onion shipper Owyhee Produce has added 1,300 acres, 200 of which will be dedicated to onions.

Froerer Farms Inc. acquired acreage along the Snake River, according to a news release from Nyssa, Ore.-based Owyhee.

The additional 200 acres of onions will give Froerer Farms 800 acres of onion production in the region.

Froerer Farms also grows asparagus, beans, beets, corn, peas, mint and wheat.

The additional acreage will allow Froerer Farms to better rotate crops, Craig Froerer, chief executive officer, said in the release.

“By rotating our land to onions and other crops only one time every 5 years or so, we are building higher organic matter into the soil,” he said. “This way we use less water, few chemicals and fertilizers and can virtually eliminate fumigation.”
