Demoulas Market Basket has been named Pear Retailer of the Year by Pear Bureau Northwest, Milwaukie, Ore., in the award’s inaugural year.

The honor was awarded to the Tewksbury, Mass.-based company for its merchandising strategies that led to a 20% average annual increase in pear sales in the past two years.

“Proper space allocation and location was one of the key strategies that Market Basket used to see pear sales at this level,” said Kevin Moffitt, president and chief executive officer of Pear Bureau Northwest.

“They successfully created a destination display with multiple pear varieties offered together, in two sizes, in bulk and in overwrapped packaging. They also utilized auxiliary displays and end cap displays to help increase visibility for this high impulse purchase fruit, and they also priced their pears competitively,” said Moffitt.

Members of the Market Basket staff were also awarded registration, travel, and lodging for the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit in Atlanta in October.
