The Produce for Better Health Foundation is recognizing two dozen retail supporters for helping boost produce consumption.

Hockessin, Del.-based PBH plans to honor retail “role models” and “champions” for commitment to the Fruits & Veggies — More Matters campaign at a March 18 awards luncheon at its annual conference in Scottsdale, Ariz., according to a news release.

The 2013 retail role models are:

  • Ahold USA;
  • Basha’s;
  • Homeland Stores;
  • Hy-Vee;
  • Meijer’s;
  • Redner’s Markets;
  • Roundy’s;
  • Save Mart;
  • Skogen’s Festival Foods;
  • SpartanNash;
  • United Supermarkets; and
  • Weis Markets.

Retail champions are:

  • Associated Wholesale Grocers;
  • Big Y Foods;
  • Donelan’s Supermarkets;
  • Food Lion;
  • Foodtown;
  • Harris Teeter;
  • Key Food Stores Cooperative;
  • King Kullen Grocery Co.;
  • Marsh Supermarkets;
  • Schnuck’s;
  • Wakefern Foods; and
  • Wal-Mart.

Role model status is PBH’s highest level of recognition, said Antoine Oakley, public relations and communications manager. They do more than normal support of the campaign and brand through various ways including using the More Matters logo in their weekly circulars, in special promotions, point-of-sale material and in newsletters and advertising, he said.

They also serve as a PBH board of trustees members, attend the group’s annual board meeting and dinner/auction, volunteer on committees and provide content for consumer columns on, Oakley said.

“PBH is pleased to shine a well-deserved spotlight on these supermarket retailers who have gone above and beyond to leverage the Fruits & Veggies — More Matters brand and national health campaign to educate consumers and increase consumption,” Elizabeth Pivonka, president and chief executive officer, said in the release. “From their produce departments to their frozen food aisles, these retailers remind consumers that eating more fruits and vegetables, in all forms, really does matter to their health.”
