Produce for Kids is working with a group of retailers to encourage healthy children’s eating and support local schools.

In September and October, the Orlando, Fla.-based organization’s “Healthy Families, Helping Kids” campaign promotes fresh produce consumption and supports local health and nutrition classroom projects, according to a news release.

Produce for Kids fall campaign to benefit schoolsMore than 20 fresh fruit and vegetable suppliers plan to support the campaign in more than 1,300 grocery stores in 15 states, including Publix Super Markets Inc., Lakeland, Fla., Meijer Inc. Grand Rapids, Mich., and Acme Markets Inc., Malvern, Pa.

Donations benefit, an online charity that helps school teachers, and the more items shoppers add to their grocery carts, the more local classrooms benefit, according to the release.

Produce for Kids signs feature characters from the children’s Sprout television show and directs shoppers to where they can find more than 120 Ideal Meals recipes, meal planning tools, campaign information and tips to keep families healthy with back-to-school meals, according to the release.

Last year, the campaign generated more than $169,000 and supported 652 classroom projects throughout the U.S.

“We’re delighted to be partnering with again this year and continuing to help our grocery retail partners support local classrooms in their areas,” John Shuman, Produce for Kids’ president and president of Shuman Produce Inc., Reidsville, Ga., said in the release. “We’re helping to educate kids, both at home and in the classroom, on the importance of a healthy diet with fresh fruits and vegetables by funding health and nutrition-based projects,” he said in the release.

Produce for Kids plans to promote the campaign through social media and plans to sponsor sweepstakes and giveaways on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
