Representatives of Sakata Seed America Inc. were clad in red May 9 as they showed their support for the American Heart Association and its Go Red For Women movement.

About 20 women from the Morgan Hill, Calif.-based vegetable and ornamental seed firm attended the Central Coast’s annual Go Red For Women luncheon, which the company also helped sponsor.

The luncheon, as well as other events throughout the year, is designed to bring awareness to heart disease and strokes among women.

“We share the mission of building healthier lives within our company and our community — locally, nationally and throughout the industry,” Alecia Troy, Sakata Seed senior marketing manager, said in a news release.

The luncheon and accompanying expo hosted about 180 people from the northern central coast region and raised about $57,000 from individuals and corporate sponsors, according to the release.

Other produce companies represented included Mann Packing, Taylor Farms, and Driscoll’s.

As part of its continuing support for heart-health awareness, Sakata Seed plans to participate in the Central Coast Heart Walk in September and the AHA’s National Healthy Eating Day, Nov. 5, when Americans are encouraged to make healthful dietary changes.
