Growers with South Africa’s Western Cape Citrus Producers Forum have established the Summer Citrus Soccer Star Award, which aims to honor eight youth soccer players from across the U.S.Winners will be selected for displaying courage, imagination, commitment, unbeatable determination and success in adverse situations both on and off the playing field, according to a news release.“By establishing a citrus export program to the United States in 1999 our growers demonstrated those same characteristics,” Suhanra Conradie, chief executive officer for the Citrusdal-based forum, said in the release. “We recognize these same traits in the youth soccer players with their character, vitality and pursuit of excellence on and off the soccer field.”The contest is open to players ages 8-18 enrolled in U.S. Youth Soccer programs, which boast more than 3 million registered players, according to the release.Each winner can receive a prize valued up to $250. Those currently enrolled in college are not eligible.Players may self-nominate or be nominated by a coach, fellow player, friend or parent, the release said, and one boy and one girl will be selected from each of the four U.S. Youth Soccer regions.Winners will be announced July 24 at the Player Luncheon during the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Rock Hill, S.C., according to the release.The contest is open for nominees through July 13.Visit or for further information or to enter.
