SunnyRidge Farm has inked a deal to produce a new Mexican raspberry variety.

Winter Haven, Fla.-based SunnyRidge joined forces with Chilean shipper Viverosur to ship Amira raspberries from Mexico, according to a SunnyRidge news release.

The Amira, an Italian variety, was introduced into European markets in 2010 and received superior ratings for taste, quality and size from several European retailers.

SunnyRidge will partner with several grower-shippers based in Mexico on production of the berries.

The new raspberry program complements SunnyRidge’s Mexican blueberry deal, company president and chief executive officer Keith Mixon said in the release.

Raspberry production in Mexico is growing. Through July 24, about 33.6 million pounds had been exported to the U.S., up from 29.6 million pounds last year at the same time, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
