Officials with Syngenta Seeds, Minnetonka, Minn., broke ground Nov. 14 on an expansion of its seed research and production facility south of Woodland, Calif.

When completed in 2014, the $11.2 million facility will host a center of excellence, which will focus on North American cucurbit research and development, according to a news release.

Cucurbits include squash, melons, cucumbers, pumpkins and cantaloupe.

The facility also conducts breeding and research into cereals, corn and tomatoes. Vegetable seeds produced in Woodland are shipped globally.

The expansion will include construction of new greenhouses, specialized plant growth environments, a new plant pathology laboratory and expanded work space for research and development.
