USA Pears has recognized three school districts that have not only served pears to students in fun and appealing ways but have also educated students and staff about pear ripening and varieties.

San Diego Unified School District, School District of Pickens County, S.C., and the School District of New Berlin, Wis., were named School Foodservice All-Stars for the 2014-15 season, according to a news release.

The districts, which combined serve more than 148,000 students, feature pears frequently on menus in a variety of ways, including sliced and whole on the salad bar. They also use the fruit in new ways.

The Pickens County district, for example, serves “pear bow ties” — two ripe pear halves in a boat with whipped cream and a cherry. The dish also plays off the principal, who wears a bow tie every day.

This is the second year that the Portland, Ore.-based USA Pears has recognized school districts that take creative approaches to serving pears.
