The Vidalia onion industry has chosen the first recipient of a scholarship that honors a Vidalia area teenager.

The $1,000 Courtney Wilkes Ag & Vet Scholarship from the Vidalia Onion Business Council went to Kristen Purvis, a Tattnall County, Ga., high school senior who graduated in May.

Purvis, a class salutatorian, plans to study veterinary medicine and return to the Vidalia region after graduation, according to a news release.

Wilkes, 15, of Lyons, Ga., was murdered during a 2011 family vacation in Seagrove Beach, Fla. The Wilkes family is known for working in Vidalia onion production.

Wilkes family supporters have donated enough money to award at least one $1,000 scholarship a year, according to the release.
