The Texas Workforce Commission named Village Farms as one of five finalists for the of Texas Employer of the Year Award. Of the top tier nominees, they are the only one from the food and agriculture sector.

Village Farms is in company with some big names, competing against Caterpillar Inc., Durcon Incorporated, Exxon Mobile Corporation and GE Transportation for the award, according to a news release.

Companies were nominated for contributions to community workforces through innovation and collaboration, while ensuring Texas remains competitive, according to the release.

“As we move into 2014 we will be celebrating our 25th year of business which makes this award all the more valued for us as a company,” said Michael DeGiglio, president and chief executive officer of Village Farms, in the release. “As a company we will continue to strive for growth opportunities for our employees and the communities we support as one of the largest rural employers in the great state of Texas.”

The winner will be announced Dec. 5 at the Annual Texas Workforce Conference in San Antonio.
