The National Watermelon Promotion Board is tipping its hat to retailers that creatively merchandised the fruit during National Watermelon Month in July.
The Orlando, Fla.-based organization announced the winning stores that participated in the group’s national watermelon display contest.
Macey’s Supermarket in Lehi, Utah, won grand prize. In a news release, the board said the store “displayed watermelons in a big way, showcasing the world’s largest watermelon display with over 188 bins of fresh watermelons available for sale at the store’s grand opening event.”
The store sold all 188 bins in just 4 days, Heidi Thomas, Macey’s produce manager, said in a news release. She said the store had to procure an additional 40 bins to get it through the remainder of its promotional event.
As grand prize winner, Thomas receives $1,000 and the chance to attend the association’s Feb. 22-26 convention in Amelia Island, Fla.
The association named winners in Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Canada.
