The Wegman Family Charitable Foundation awarded the Center for Produce Safety with $250,000 during the opening ceremonies for the center’s second annual Produce Research Symposium.
Danny Wegman, chairman of the foundation board and chief executive officer of Wegmans Food Markets, Rochester, N.Y., said his recent experience as chairman of Food Marketing Institute’s food safety task force was among the reasons the foundation supported CPS, a center for food safety research, according to a news release.
The gift support the center’s research grant programs. The center funds general produce and commodity-specific food safety research. It has given $6.8 million in funding to 43 research projects, with help from public and private research partners. Another $3 million will be awarded later this summer.
It was the first gift from the retail sector since CPS was founded in 2007.
