Finalists gathered at the American Institute of Baking Oct. 12-13 in Manhattan, Kan., to compete in the California Raisin Marketing Board’s fifth annual America’s Best Raisin Bread Contest.

There were 36 finalists in the contest and each finalist had to bake breads containing California raisins, according to a news release.

Thirteen entries were winners. The categories were Artisan, Commercial and Breakfast. The California Prize recognized effort, according to the release.

The winners are:


  • Grand Prize — Courtney Reed & Susan Kay, Bay State Milling, Quincy, Mass.
  • Judges’ Prize — Philippe Sanchez, Marriott International, Orlando, Fla.
  • Idea Prize — Siddharth Mangalore, Kendall College, Chicago.
  • Student Prize — Jack Lonetto, Johnson & Wales University, North Miami, Fla.


  • Grand Prize — Pamela Adams, University of Massachusetts
  • Judges’ Prize — Suzanne Tatis, Art Institute of Las Vegas
  • Idea Prize — Molly Burke, Cargill, Plymouth, Minn.
  • Student Prize — Maria Quinn, French Pastry School, Chicago


  • Grand Prize — Olivier Saintemarie, French Pavilion at Epcot, Orlando, Fla.
  • Judges’ Prize — Joe Falcinelli, Bennison’s Bakery, Evanston, Ill.
  • Idea Prize — Rachel Crampsey, Montclair Bread Co., Montclair, N.J.
  • Student Prize — Roman Anglin, Ritz Carlton International, Valencia College, Orlando.

The winners will receive a tour of California, including the Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena and the San Joaquin Valley.

More than 100 professional and student bakers submitted original formulas to the competition. Finalists were chosen by a review of submitted written applications and photographs, according to the release.
