A new storage research facility will help Wisconsin potato growers find the best ways to store spuds.

On Sept. 26, officials from the Antigo-based Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association turned over control of the multimillion dollar Potato and Vegetable Storage Research Facility to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, according to a release from the association.

University researchers will study the relationship between field management and storage practices at the facility, which was conceived, designed and built by Wisconsin potato growers.

Research will include work not only on storage procedures, but on how growing practices affect sugar content and handling after harvest.

The facility has nine 2,000-cwt. bulk bins for large-scale research and nine storage lockers for smaller trials.

Five Wisconsin growers provided the association with assistance for the facility:

  • TJ Kennedy, Heartland Farms Inc.
  • Steve Diercks, Coloma Farms Inc. and
  • Tom Wild, Wild Seed Farms Inc.
