(Dec. 15) Affiliated Food Stores Inc., Abilene, Texas, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in early December.

The petition, filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma, was also made under trade names Abilene Distribution Co., Oklahoma Wholesale Grocers Inc. and Affiliated Enterprises Inc., according to court documents.

The company asked the court for use of cash collateral to meet its financial obligations.

These debts included payroll through about mid-December, inventory payments, taxes, transportation expenses and overhead costs.

Affiliated had bounced about $37,300 in payroll checks, including taxes, in early December, according to the documents. The company said it might lose its employees if it didn’t acquire $113,000 to settle payroll expenses.

Court documents listed Affiliated’s debts at $14.5 million, while its assets were about $17.4 million. The company has 2,199 creditors. Telephone calls to Affiliated president Darrell Earnest were not returned.
