(May 2) Yet another dot-com guru has left the e-commerce industry.

Mike Agostini, former director of retail at Agribuys.com, Torrance, Calif., joined Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Bentonville, Ark., on May 1 as the home office team leader for fruit.

Agostini joined Agribuys in July 2000 after a five-year stint as the category manager of produce at Food Lion Inc., Salisbury, N.C.

“Agostini has a background with a cost-conscious, low-price retailer (Food Lion), which gives him an understanding of our commitment to provide Wal-Mart shoppers with low prices and great value,” said Ron McCormick, produce director for Wal-Mart.

McCormick also said Agostini’s Agribuys experience proved his ability to deal with rapid change, as well as his grasp for technology.

In all, Agostini has more than 20 years of experience in the produce industry. He also has had leadership roles with industry groups such as the Produce for Better Health Foundation, Wilmington, Del., where he was appointed chairman of the retail marketing committee in April 1999.

Agostini fills the position of Steve Pinkston, who has become a regional buyer in the field. McCormick said Pinkston’s position was created to increase the number of regional buying team leaders to four. In his new post, Pinkston will manage the Southeastern distribution centers. He will work out of Wal-Mart’s Pageland, S.C.-facility.

McCormick said the company hopes Agostini’s training will be a short orientation, and Pinkston will turn over leadership of the fruit category to Agostini almost immediately. Wal-Mart also wants Agostini to begin leading the Global Sourcing Project Team.

Agostini was unavailable for comment.
