(Oct. 27) A third-generation family member has been tapped as president of Nogales, Ariz.-based melon company Al Harrison Co. Distributors Inc.

Brent Harrison, formerly vice president, took over for his father, Thomas Harrison, in early October. Thomas Harrison retired after 20 years as president.

The company was started by Al Harrison, Brent Harrison’s grandfather, in 1955.

Brent Harrison has worked for the family business since he graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in international marketing in 1989. He started working as the sales manager until he was named vice president in 1998.

Brent Harrison’s sister, Shelley Harrison, will fill the vice president position. Before the change, Shelley Harrison was the secretary/treasurer of the company.

Brent Harrison said his father had been slowly shifting responsibility to prepare for his retirement, but he doesn’t think he will completely bow out of the industry.

“I think once in produce, it is in your blood. I think he’ll be checking in and calling a few customers because of the friendships he has,” Harrison said.
