(Dec. 9) Chiquita Brands International Inc. is staying put.

The 106-year-old company, which moved its base from New York to Cincinnati in 1988, announced Dec. 8 that retaining its current base would help it stay focused on its top priorities, company spokesman Mike Mitchell said.

The top three priorities “include managing through the EU banana tariff regime, improving profitability in our North American business and integrating Fresh Express,” Mitchell said.

Chiquita had been considering Atlanta and Broward County, Fla., as possible new home bases.

“The reason we were considering it at all is our lease in this building is expiring next August and we went through a strategic review to determine if Cincinnati is the right location long term for Chiquita,” Mitchell said.

The company is negotiating a multiyear lease to remain at its current address on Fifth Street in downtown Cincinnati.
