(Nov. 13, 12:57 p.m.) California Giant Berry Farms, Watsonville, is launching a training program for its retail customers.

“We do a lot of that already with a few customers, but it’s been on request,” said Cindy Jewell, director of marketing. “Now we’re trying to go in and suggest these things more.”

Jewell said retailers can send a group to visit California Giant field locations to gain firsthand knowledge of the company’s growing, harvesting and cooling operations. She said customers can visit Southern California growing districts in February and March or Watsonville and Salinas from mid-April through November.

Another option is for California Giant sales and marketing personnel to visit a retailer for a 90-minute to two-hour training seminar with produce managers. That option includes a sampling program and materials to share with shoppers.

Jewell said that explaining the company’s processes to retailers ensures that produce managers and their staffs are better able to answer consumer questions about where the product came from or how it was grown. She said the training also should lead to better care and handling.

California Giant also has prepared an eight-minute video for produce managers to share with their staffs and a two-minute video geared to consumers for in-store television.

Both videos are focused on strawberries, but Jewell said the company is considering similar tools for blueberries, raspberries and black berries.

Retailers visiting growing areas can see the company’s entire range of products, Jewell said.
