(July 8, 3:41 p.m., PACKER WEB EXCLUSIVE) California Giant Berry Farms, Watsonville, Calif., is joining in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life for the fifth year in a row.

The 24-hour, Aug. 9 event unites many groups and individuals across the country in a fundraising effort to fight cancer. The Watsonville-area relay is palnned for the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds.

A large portion of the local donations is expected to stay Watsonville and support cancer patients, survivors and families of cancer patients.

“We do it because it’s something we can do right here in our community, and people in the community will benefit from our efforts,” said Cindy Jewell, director of marketing.

California Giant Berry Farms, the largest sponsor of the Watsonville Relay for Life, calls its team “Hope in a Giant Way.” As a leading sponsor, the company pledges $10,000. Through a series of community fundraisers, company employees are pledging an additional $20,000.

As of July 8, employees had raised about $10,000 and expect to raise another $5,000 at its annual barbecue cookout July 15.
