(July 16) WASHINGTON, D.C. — Health and Human Services Director Tommy Thompson named Julie Gerberding as director of the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on July 3.

Gerberding, an infectious disease expert who has played a major role in the CDC’s counter-terrorism efforts, also was appointed administrator for the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Gerberding, 46, had been acting principal deputy director of the agency since Jeffrey Koplan had stepped down as director March 31.
