(Oct. 9, PACKER WEB EXCLUSIVE) The Chilean Avocado Importers Association is working with registered dietitians to market Chilean hass avocados.

Many retail chains now have registered dietitians on staff to guide consumers, give classes and work with the media.

The association released a CD with nutrition information, recipes and photos.

“It’s a pretty extensive portfolio of information,” said Maggie Bezart, the importers’ association marketing director.

The association also has released a book containing the information along with information on Chile, food safety, retail programs, point-of-sale materials and a full contact list of importers, Bezart said.

The materials are available to registered dietitians through their local merchandisers.

The Chilean association participated in the Food Marketing Institute’s annual Consumer Affairs, Communications and Community Relations Seminar on Oct. 5-7 in Boston.

Bezart said the seminar gave the organization access to dieticians at more than 24 retail grocery chains.

Youth soccer support

The avocado association also is sponsoring the American Youth Soccer Organization, promoting healthy eating.

AYSO reaches more than 650,000 children and their parents and 250,000 volunteer coaches and administrators, according to a news release. This is the second year for the promotion and it includes “Everyone Plays,” an online contest for teams to post videos showing Chilean hass avocados as part of their practice or post-game snacks. The Web site is www.everyoneplayswithavocados.com.

AYSO is sending e-mail blasts to promote the contest.

CAIA also sponsors the Major League Soccer and Chivas USA brands and is involved at soccer clinics throughout Southern California.
