(April 30) The California Avocado Commission, Santa Ana, has reported that avocado shipments during the Cinco de Mayo holiday will surpass those during last year's Super Bowl, said Jan DeLyser, vice president of marketing for the commission.

The commission, based on shipments scheduled for the week prior to the holiday, is projecting 27 million pounds of avocados to be consumed in the U.S., an increase of 17% from the Super Bowl.

DeLyser said California produces about 375 million pounds of avocados annually, while the U.S. con-sumes about 603 million pounds, including imports.

She said Cinco de Mayo and the Super Bowl top the list, but other holidays also are important times for avocado sales.
