The Los Angeles-based Climate Registry is a non-profit greenhouse gas emissions registry for North America.

“Being awarded Climate Registered status for a second consecutive year demonstrates Gills Onions’ commitment to outstanding environmental leadership within the food growing and processing industry,” Nikki Rodoni, director of sustainability for Gills Onions, said in a news release.

Gills Onions has measured, managed and reported its greenhouse gas emissions since 2008, according to the release. Achieving Climate Registered status requires meeting transparency, accuracy and comprehensiveness standards.

Gills Onions in 2009 opened its Advanced Energy Recovery System, converting 100% of the firm’s daily production waste into renewable energy and cattle feed.

“Climate Registered organizations understand that there are both environmental and economic benefits to understanding and managing your carbon footprint,” Denise Sheehan, executive director of The Climate Registry, said in the release.
